Artist Statement
An artist commits part of the soul to their work, but this is not a subtractive process for Robert Canaga. He grows when he puts these images out into the world. He gains knowledge of himself when he completes a painting. Each work leads to the next, like completing a puzzle.
He is a purist when it comes to color; he carries precise colors in his mind’s eye. The windows of his studio do not reveal the surrounding landscape, because he deliberately decided not to be influenced by the external. He is fascinated by color frequencies and how those frequencies relate to each other.
He works from glimpses of nature, still life, vineyards, and other landforms.
Several times in his life, he has been very close to his own death. These experiences, and his art, taught him to fully stand in the moment, where there is no time, and everything happens at once.
Press Release
Don Dexter Gallery has an exciting exhibition of never before shown paintings from renowned Eugene artist Robert Canaga. His upcoming solo exhibition Robert Canaga: Journey is a collection of paintings inspired by his travels, time in the military, and years away from the craft when he was young. He acknowledges that every painting is based on a memory or reaction, but he never stopped to think about what inspired the art. He just painted.
Immerse yourself in his beautiful and heartfelt works, including Journey, 2024, oil on panel, and Tuscan Memory, 2024, oil on mounted linen. All but one are oil paintings.
This will be his first gallery show in Eugene since closing the OPUS6IX Gallery.
On view at Don Dexter Gallery in Eugene at 2911 Tennyson Ave #202 from March 9 through April 30. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 9, from 1 to 4pm, along with a special Saturday Session artist talk on April 6, at 1pm, with guest artist Pam Spettel leading a discussion on the exhibition Journey with artist Robert Canaga.
