Bill Haynes

Inspiration can come from any unique condition such as unusual lighting, a facial expression, a piece of architecture, unique angles and shapes. Seeing the ordinary and finding the extraordinary in it. The landscapes of Ansel Adams and the Native American portraits of Edward Curtis are especially inspirational to me.
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

“Pictures done in any medium—including photography—are not reality. That’s a good thing. It allows an artist to say what they want, in the way they want, about the reality they observe. By creatively capturing an image then, through imaginative editing, have that moment enhanced produces an image that speaks to the viewer in the artist’s voice. For Bill this means a mood, an emotion, a structure or pattern—a truth as he sees it that he can share with others. When you see his work, he’d like it to generate something similar for you enriched by your own experience.”
Bill Haynes was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, and has traveled through most of the United States and more than thirty countries on five continents. He began photography as a young sailor in the US Navy using a Kodak Retina IIIc 35mm camera. His love of photography followed him on this and other adventures throughout a business career and into an active travel retirement. This generated opportunities to see people and places that have both broadened and deepened his ability to observe and creatively photograph what he experienced. His recent work is all digital; much of it is done in black & white. His work has been displayed locally in a number of venues including Jacobs Gallery, Harris Hall, O’Brien Gallery, Vistra Gallery, Emerald Art Center and others.
The miles of hiking and biking trails are a constant source of pleasure. From lowland river walks to the heights of Mt. Pisgah and Spencer’s Butte, they are a joy.
